Promise & Law Keys

Age Range: 7–10
Time Required: 30 minutes + decorating time
Fundamental: Promise & Law
Discover, learn, and practice the values of the Girl Guide Promise and Law.

Create a set of keys with messages or ideas to help you remember the Girl Guide Promise and Law and what it means to be a Girl Guide.

Hint: Make this as a Promise Ceremony Gift!

Materials Needed

  • A copy of the Promise and Law
  • A key shape cut out (or draw your own)
  • Plain or muti-coloured cardboard.
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Textas and any extra decorating material

Help Needed

Younger girls may need help drawing a key or printing a key shape to use as a template

Instructions

  1. Draw a key shape on a firm piece of cardboard e.g. an old cereal box.
  2. Cut the key shape out to be used as a template for all your Promise and Law Keys.
  3. Place the key template on top of your plain or multi-coloured cardboard and trace the shape of the key onto the cardboard. Repeat this 13 times to create 13 keys.
  4. Cut out the 13 keys.
  5. Use the hole punch to make a hole in the end of each key.
  6. Write one line of the Promise and one line of the Law on each key.
  7. On the back of each key write an idea, quote or message to help you remember or show what that part of the promise or law means.
  8. Decorate your keys with texta’s, glitter and anything else you have.
  9. Thread your keys (in the correct order) onto the pipe cleaner. Bend and twist the pipe cleaner to form a circle like a key ring.

Why don’t you…

  • Add a Trefoil cut out as a key ring charm.
  • Make this as a Promise Ceremony gift for a new Girl Guide
  • Separate the keys and make them into swaps, just add a safety pin.

As a Girl Guide, How Can I Lead This Activity?

  • Think about the ways Girl Guides can show how they live by the Guide Law.
  • Research inspirational quotes and share what you find with your Unit.

As a Unit Leader, How Can I Make This Activity Girl Led?

  • Allow the girls to decide if they would prefer to focus on just the Promise or just the Law
  • Ask older girls to lead discussions and brainstorm messages and ideas to be included on keys.

As a Unit, how can we make sure everyone is included?

  • Give each girl a chance to contribute to the discussion
  • Check that everyone has an idea or message to include. It can be the same as someone elses and parents can help.

Follow Up Questions and Reflections

  • What can we do differently next time?
  • What other activities could you do with your new skills?
  • How did it make you feel?
  • What did you like or dislike?
  • What did you learn?
