Poi

Age Range: 7–17
Time Required: 20 minutes to make the Poi
As long as you like to practice a Poi performance
 
Fundamental: World Guiding
To make and learn about a traditional performance art from the Maori Culture of New Zealand.
Poi refers to both a style of performing art and the equipment used for engaging in poi performance.

Materials Needed

  • 1 cup of Rice
  • 2 small zip lock bags
  • 2 plastic shopping bags
  • Tape or string
  • 2 pieces of cord about 50cms long

Help Needed

Younger Guides may need a hand to tie the Poi tight

Instructions

  1. Place about ½ a cup of rice into each ziplock bag & seal.
  2. Place each bag of rice inside a plastic shopping bag.
  3. Tie a double over hand knot in the end of your cord and place the knot in the shopping bag as well.
  4. Tie a piece of sting or tape around the shopping bag to make snug ball with the cord coming out.
  5. Cut away the excess at the top of the bag.
  6. At the other end of the cord tie another double overhand knot about 7 cms down to make a loop handles.
  7. Find some clear space, out the back yard would be good and practice swinging you Poi in circles. Try getting both Poi to swing at the same speed. Try going the same way and then try spinning in different directions.
    While you practice your spinning try taking a step forward, feet together, then back again.
